35 Doctoral Scholarships at Victoria University of Wellington, 2017-2018

The Victoria University of Wellington is offering 35 doctoral scholarships for New Zealand and international students. These scholarships are available for pursuing doctoral or PhD degree programme.
University’s aim is to provide a learning environment to help students achieve their full potential, but they will also provide support if they have difficulties.
Victoria University has a tradition of fostering strong global links in teaching and research and programmes of national significance and international quality.
Victoria’s English language requirements are strict and not negotiable. If student’s first language is not English, they must provide evidence of English proficiency before they will be accepted as a PhD candidate. 
Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing doctoral or PhD degree at Victoria University. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand and international students in any discipline.

Number of Awards: 35 scholarships are available.
Scholarship Award: Scholarships include a $23,500 stipend annually + tuition fees.

Eligibility: 
  • The Scholarships are open to graduates of any university within or outside of New Zealand who intend to enrol full time for a doctorate (PhD) at Victoria University or who have commenced their doctoral study at Victoria University.
  • These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand and international students in any discipline.

College Admission Requirement: To enrol for the PhD student must meet the prescribed academic standard and be accepted by a School.
  • Before admission, applicants must have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree with first or upper second class honours or a master’s degree at an equivalent standard at a New Zealand university.
  • Alternatively, students may enrol initially in a master’s degree and then be allowed to transfer to the PhD.
  • In exceptional circumstances; applicants may be permitted to enrol without meeting these criteria if they have extensive relevant experience.
English Language Requirement: Victoria’s English language requirements are strict and not negotiable. If student’s first language is not English, they must provide evidence of English proficiency before they will be accepted as a PhD candidate. Requirements are:
  • TOEFL 575 with (preferably) a TWE of 5, or 237 on the computer-based test; or 90 on the internet-based test with a minimum of 20 in writing; or
  • IELTS overall band of 6.5, no sub-score below 6; or
  • CAE grade B; or
  • a minimum of two ratings of 5 and two ratings of 4 in the Victoria University English proficiency programme test.

New Zealand Government Development Scholarships for Developing Countries, 2017-2018

New Zealand Government is offering scholarships for students starting full-time postgraduate degree programmes in 2017. Scholarships are available for national of African Commonwealth countries, Africa – non-Commonwealth countries,  Asia, Latin America, Caribbean Commonnwealth countries and Caribbean non-Commonnwealth countries.

New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) give candidates from selected developing countries an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills through study in specific subject areas which will assist in the development of their home country.
The New Zealand Aid Programme delivers New Zealand’s official support for developing countries. The purpose of New Zealand’s aid is to develop shared prosperity and stability in the Pacific and beyond, drawing on the best of New Zealand’s knowledge and skills.
Applicants must return home for at least two years after your scholarship ends, and apply your skills and knowledge so your country can benefit from what you’ve learned. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language. If you are awaiting the result of an IELTS or TOEFL test, you can note this on your scholarship application form.
Course Level: Scholarships are available for full-time postgraduate study (i.e. Postgraduate Certificate, Diplomas and Masters degrees) in New Zealand except for China, Nepal and Mongolia which are available also for PhD study and in for Timor Leste which are awarded for both undergraduate and postgraduate study (Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters (research and/or coursework) and Doctoral).

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing your scholarship.
  • Be a citizen of the country from which you are applying for a scholarship.
  • Not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, European Union countries, United Kingdom, Japan, Israel, South Korea, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia.

Sir Ratan Tata Postdoctoral Fellowship for South Asian Applicants, 2017

The Sir Ratan Tata Foundation and the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) invite applications for the Sir Ratan Tata research fellowships. The Fellowship is open to candidates from South Asia, that is, the SAARC region which includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The main objective of the university is to provide high quality, comprehensive educational and training opportunities that are compatible to changing needs of the students.
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is a world class centre for its concentration of teaching and research across the full range of the social, political and economic sciences.
If applicant’s first language is not English and if their previous degree has not been taught entirely in English, they will be required to provide evidence of their English language ability.
Course Level: Fellowships are available for pursuing Postdoctoral Research programme.
Study Subject: The Fellow is expected to engage in social science research broadly on the themes of Economy and Society in South Asia with a particular focus on the following themes:
