Fulbright Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships for Indian Scholars in USA, 2018-2019

Applications are invited for Fulbright Nehru doctoral research fellowships available for Indian scholars for 2018/2019 academic year. Indian scholars can apply for these Fulbright Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships.
Funded by the U.S. Government, the Fulbright Programme aims at achieving mutual understanding through academic and cultural exchange.
Fulbright scholarships will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership qualities, and a commitment to improving cross cultural relations through international exchange.
Course Level: Scholarships are awarded for doctoral degree programme.
Study Subject: Applications are invited in the following fields only: Agricultural Sciences; Bioengineering; Computer Science (with emphasis on cyber security and digital economy); Economics; Education Policy and Planning; Energy Studies; International Law (limited to environmental law, immigration law, and labor law); International Security and Strategic Studies; Materials Science (with emphasis on environmental applications); Neurosciences; Public Health; Study of India (limited to anthropology, history, sociology, and visual and performing arts); Study of the United States (limited to anthropology, history, sociology, and visual and performing arts); Urban and Regional Planning (with emphasis on smart cities and waste management); Women’s and Gender Studies.
Scholarship Award: The fellowships provide a monthly stipend, Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges per U.S. Government guidelines, round-trip economy class air travel, applicable allowances and modest affiliation fees, if any. Selected scholars will have opportunities to audit non-degree courses, conduct research and gain practical work experience in suitable settings in the U.S. No allowances are provided for dependents. The grant is not sufficient to support family members.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for this scholarship:
In addition to the General Prerequisites:
  • Applicants should have done adequate research in the relevant field, especially in the identification of resources in India and the U.S. You should be registered for your Ph.D. at an Indian institution by August 1, 2016. In your online application form, one of the referees must be your Ph.D. supervisor. S/he must comment on your research work and the usefulness of the fellowship, and indicates the Ph.D. registration date and topic.
  • This grant is intended for Ph.D. students to conduct research essential to their dissertations/thesis. Therefore, your expected Ph.D. thesis submission date should not be earlier than three months after your Fulbright-Nehru grant end date. For example, if May 2019 is your grant end date, you cannot submit your thesis before August 2019. Please indicate the Ph.D. registration date and the expected Ph.D. thesis submission date in the Applicant Annexure.
  • If you are employed, please follow the instructions carefully regarding employer’s endorsement. If applicable, please obtain the endorsement from the appropriate administrative authority on the FNDR Employer’s Endorsement Form. The employer must indicate that leave will be granted for the fellowship period.
  • You should upload a ‘writing sample’ such as a copy of an article or paper published/presented or extracts from the M.Phil. Thesis in your online application form. Note: These fellowships are for pre-doctoral level research. Applicants with Ph.D. degrees or those at the final stage of Ph.D. thesis submission will not be considered.

College Admission Requirement
Entrance Requirements: Applicants should have done adequate research in the relevant field, especially in the identification of resources in India and the U.S. They should be registered for their  Ph.D. at an Indian institution by August 1, 2016.
How to Apply: The mode of application is online.
Applicants have to upload the following documents in order to be eligible:
  • Upload your study/research objectives on page 4 of the online application form.
  • Upload your personal statements on page 5 of the online application form.
  • Upload your curriculum vitae or resume on page 6 of the online application form. It should provide a complete picture of your educational background, work experience, and all major accomplishments (publications, awards, memberships in associations etc.).It should not exceed three pages. Do not include any photographs.
  • Upload scanned copies of your mark sheets and diploma/degree certificates beginning with your latest degree/diploma. Also upload scanned photocopies of proof of your work/professional experience, if applicable. Please combine all these documents into one PDF file (not exceeding 2 MB) and upload it on page 7 of the online application form.
  • Note: Please combine documents listed below against sl. no. 5, 6 and 7 into one PDF file (not exceeding 2 MB) and upload it on page 11 of the online application form.
  • Please complete the FNDR Applicant Annexure Form electronically and upload onpage 11 of the online application form.
  • Upload scanned Signature Form on page 11 of the online application form. Do not forget to sign before scanning.
  • If you have a valid and current passport, please upload the passport bio pages (pages with your photo, name, passport number, date of issue and validity etc)on page 11 of the online application form.
  • Upload writing sample (which could be a copy of an article or paper published/presented or extracts from your M.Phil. thesis) on page 12 of the online application form.
Note: Please combine documents listed below against sl. no. 9, 10, and 11 into one PDF file (not exceeding 2 MB) and upload it on page 13 of the online application form.
  • Upload TOEFL score reports taken in 2014 or later (if any) on page 13 of the online application form.
  • USIEF strongly recommends all applicants to identify institutions with which they wish to be affiliated and to correspond, in advance, with potential host institutions. You will be affiliated to one U.S. host institution for your grant. If you have secured letters of invitation from a U.S. institution, please upload iton page 13 of the online application form.
  • Upload your Ph.D. registration certificate issued by the university on page 13 of the online application form. It should indicate the topic of your Ph.D. thesis, the name of your Ph.D. supervisor and the Ph.D. registration date.
  • Please scan and upload the documents. Do not upload images taken by your mobile camera.
  • With regards to the Letters of Reference, one of your referees must be your Ph.D. supervisor. S/he should comment on your research work and the usefulness of the fellowship, and indicates the Ph.D. registration date.Request your three referees to submit their reference letters online. You must click on the Recommendations button on the Home page of the online application to register your recommenders. However, if they cannot submit their reference letters online, please provide them the Confidential Letter of Reference Form that you can download from the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships webpage on the USIEF. Please request your referee(s) to send the completed Confidential Letter of Reference Formto the Senior Program Officer, Indian Program, USIEF, Fulbright House, 12 Hailey Road, New Delhi 110 001. All letters of reference should reach by June 15, 2017.
  • If you are employed, please follow the instructions carefully regarding employer’s endorsement. The employer must indicate that leave will be granted for the fellowship period. After reviewing your application as part of the Application Inspector process, please print a copy of your application. Submit the printout of your Fulbright-Nehru application along with the FNDR Employer’s Endorsement Form to your employer. Please obtain the endorsement from the appropriate administrative authority on the FNDR Employer’s Endorsement Form and upload it on page 14 of the online application form. Or, your employer can send this form directly to the Senior Program Officer,Indian Program, United States-India Educational Foundation, 12 Hailey Road, New Delhi 110 001 so as to reach no later than June 15, 2017.
